Why was 'The Life of Brian' taken as such an insult by some Christians?

I've never understood that, because Jesus is only in the film for about 17 seconds. It's Jesus giving the Sermon on the Mount, then it cuts to the back of the crowd and it's Brian and his mother struggling to hear him. That's it. Jesus makes a very brief appearance and he's not doing anything comical in it.
